Quincy
University
Early Exploratory Internship Program
Internship Policies of the Illinois
Cooperative Work Study Program
The intent of the internship
program is to help businesses to provide opportunities for our students to learn
about the business in areas in which they intend to study at the
university. We have formed a standing
internship advisory committee, with members from the university and from
businesses, and we have developed the following guidelines:
- Student interns may work fifteen-twenty hours per
week, at the participating employer’s business during each semester, the
exact schedule to be arranged by employer and employee. During summer
vacation periods, when school is not in session, interns may work longer hours.
- The student employee and the participating
employer will complete an employment log monthly or bi-monthly for
reimbursement to the employer, by the Quincy University Illinois
Cooperative Work Study Act Account, of matching wage amounts. Since the established minimum wage for
this program is the current Illinois rate, the business/employer will
receive half that amount for each hour claimed. In some cases, when funds are available, the compensation
will be half the cost of wages if the pay rate is higher.
- The Business/employer will handle the payment of
student intern employees in the same manner as all other employees in the
business, including handling of
W-2 forms, FICA, and all
other deductions. Since the wage
is set at a gross minimum hourly rate, deductions for such amounts from
gross pay may be made by the employer.
The University will not handle such procedures, and will reimburse
only amounts claimed up to fifteen-twenty hours per week on submission of
employment logs.
- Students are selected on the basis of their
application and are not restricted from participation in this program by
any conditions of financial need-all may apply if they are Illinois
residents and if they are students in good standing. Students who wish to earn credit for
intern activities should discuss arrangements for credit with the
Internship Faculty Advisor.
Employers may get information on available student interns from the
Internship Faculty Advisor.
- The employer will not be restricted by the
university in work assignment or supervision in any way, but it is
expected that the student will be given an opportunity to observe and to
participate in the managerial level activity during the course of the
internship.
- The Internship Faculty Advisor will contact the
employer and employee during each semester to discuss the internship. Should any termination of the
internship be necessary, the Faculty Advisor will assist in this process
and in arranging replacement interns if needed.
